David
A.A. Lodge (1934 - 2003)
David
Lodge was Holgate's local historian, and a passionate supporter of Holgate
Windmill. He lived on Grantham Drive, directly opposite the junction with
Windmill Rise. What a magnificent skyline view he must have had of the
Mill, from his front windows. For many years, David quietly badgered York's
City Fathers, to try and keep alive the issue of the Windmill's restoration.
He amassed an extensive archive collection of drawings, photos and lobbying
correspondence about the Mill, and attended the Preservation Society's
inaugural meetings.
David's wife, Judith, has kindly
passed all the documents concerning the windmill to the Society. The archivist
has custody of them.
The restored windmill will
be both an eloquent testimony and a fitting memorial to David's long,
personal crusade.
