Meet the Team
Holgate Windmill is looked after by a dedicated group of volunteers — from millers and tour guides to maintenance, events, fundraising, and behind-the-scenes organisers. We’re all here for the same reason: to keep the windmill turning and share it with the community.
Want to put faces to names? Here’s the team that helps make it happen.
The people behind the windmill
Our team is made up of volunteers with a mix of skills — practical, historical, organisational, creative, and everything in between. Some of us have been involved for years, others are newer to the windmill, but we all play a part in protecting this historic place and welcoming visitors.

The Committee
The committee helps steer the day-to-day running of Holgate Windmill — supporting volunteers, planning for the future, and keeping everything organised so the windmill can stay open, safe, and well cared for.
Steve Potts
Chair
I am one of the founding Trustees and acted as Conservation Architect for the restoration of the mill. At the November 2025 AGM I began my second period as Chair, having previously been Secretary of the Society.
Rosy Hunt
Treasurer
I’ve been a guide at the Mill since about 2011, and took milling training as soon as it began. Then I added the role of treasurer, which is a fairly busy one. I hope to keep working in and for the Mill for many years yet.
Paul Delamere
Merchandise and Milling
I’m a relatively new volunteer who has become a trustee and is also a member of the merchandise and milling groups.
I discovered the mill during covid where it was the only place that I could reliably buy flour to make my own bread. Despite living in York for over 30 years, like many of our visitors, I wasn’t really aware that it was a working mill.
This is still my main interest but I now also enjoy showing people around and helping to secure the future of the mill following the amazing restoration by our longer standing volunteers.
Helen Hoult
Vice Chair
I’ve been a trustee and volunteer at Holgate Windmill for over 25 years. As Vice Chair, I’m involved with many aspects of the mill including the volunteer co-ordination, society membership and the junior “Mini Millers” activities.
Richie Green
Health and Safety
I am a happily married man, a founder member of the HWPS, a past chair and vice chair. I am currently in charge of H&S, a member of the milling and maintenance teams and give talks to various groups with Helen Hoult. I make models of 16th century mills and the model of Holgate Windmill in the mill. I have good knowledge of mills with my own comprehensive library of mill books.
Mark Hoult
Membership
I’ve been a trustee and volunteer at Holgate Windmill for over 25 years.
As Membership Secretary, I’m responsible for recruiting new members, maintaining our membership records and co-ordinating all our society correspondence and newsletters.
Lesley Jones
Secretary and Media
I am the Secretary of the Mill but also responsible for media. This involves coordinating the media subgroup which covers the website, to promoting events, to looking at rebranding etc. It is a really interesting role and one that has changed a lot over the last few years. We are also keen breadmakers.
Alison Leadbetter
Wholesale Orders
Alison coordinates wholesale flour orders, helping local stockists and bakeries access Holgate Windmill’s traditional stoneground flour.
Jen Hay
Visits
I’ve been involved ever since building a community to restore the Mill including fundraising events: street parties, sponsored walks and Santa.
I now enjoy sharing the mill with visitors especially children with hands on activities so they understand how the mill works. It’s good to share what we’ve achieved together and look forward to handing on to others.
The Volunteers
Holgate Windmill is powered by people. Our volunteers give their time across tours, events, maintenance, education, and milling — keeping this historic place running and welcoming visitors throughout the year.
