Events at the Mill – 2 February 2018

Thursday was windy and an excellent milling day so some of the milling team met and milled around 70kg of grain. There was also quite a bit of cleaning up during the week from the Residents Festival Weekend as the bottom staircase and Stone Floor floorboards had seen plenty of wet foot traffic and were dirty and slippery in places.   Friday’s regular milling day saw us bag up all of the flour produced on Thursday so the shelves are now full again after some excellent sales over the weekend.   As you know we now have a re-cogged electric Read More …

Events at the Mill – 26 January 2018

Today was a normal Friday milling day and we proceeded to bag up the remainder of our wind milled flour so that the shelves are now full for this weekend’s Residents Festival. The mill is open both days at our usual times 11.00am to 4.00pm   Alison Leadbetter, who manages our commercial flour sales, suggested that we might try a new gift bag idea for sale in the shop (see photo). Santa in the Windmill

December is almost here and Santa has promised to visit Holgate Windmill again this year. He’ll be bringing his sack of presents, for children aged 0 to 11, to the mill on Saturday 3rd, Sunday 4th and Saturday 10th December from 2 to 4 pm, and Sunday 11th December from 10am to 12 and 2 to 4 pm. No booking is required but come early as it will be busy. The cost is £5 per child, with accompanying adults enjoying the fun for free. “Picturing the Mill” – Photography for a Summer Saturday

What’s happening? One of our resident photographers, Nick Ansell, will be at the mill this Saturday. He will be displaying a selection of images he has captured of the mill and it’s restoration over the years. You’ll be able to see the mill in it many moods and discuss different aspects of it’s photography. Whether you’re a professional, enthusiast or selfie-snapper there’s plenty of material here to work with! Come and see us any time between 11:00 and 4:00pm on Saturday 27th August. Bring your own camera and let your creativity loose.

Summer Saturdays

We’re looking forward to July as we will be starting our Summer Saturdays, which are extra events in the mill on open day Saturday afternoons. We begin on 2 July with a demonstration of traditional hand spinning from Madeline Evans of York and District Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. See how easy it looks then try it yourself! Summer Exhibition 2016 – Seeing the Wood and the Trees

This summer,  Jenny Hartland has created an exhibition being displayed on the mill’s bin floor entitled “Seeing the Wood and the Trees. It highlights different types of wood, what we use them for and where they are found in the windmill. Why not visit during one of our open days over the summer and find out more about a material we often take for granted but couldn’t do without!
