The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Holgate Windmill Preservation Society is deeply honoured to receive The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service which is the MBE for volunteer groups. It is a reflection of the passion and commitment of our past and present committee and volunteers in preserving, restoring and making a community resource of our wonderful windmill. New rules at the mill

No not those rules! These rules are the long thin timbers along the edges of the sails. Their job is to open and close the shutters as they are pulled up or down, rather like the rods on a louvre window. They are made of laminated larch but were starting to rot from water penetration, and this spring all ten rules were replaced by our millwright and several volunteers ...

Fun at St Crux

On 24 March we had a fund raising day at St Crux Church Hall which was very successful, and raised £1200 for mill maintenance. The money went toward replacing the long timber rules which operate the sail shutters. At St Crux visitors could buy soup and cakes made by mill supporters and bread rolls made by Ainsty Farm Shop from windmill flour. There was also  jewellery and a varied selection of bric a brac to buy. Lovely weather and enthusiastic volunteers made it a delightful day ...
