Visiting Holgate Windmill: times, tips, and what to look for
Holgate Windmill is open for visitors every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 to 12:30. Wednesdays and Fridays are listed as milling days.
Entry: £5.00, and under 16s are free (plus membership options).
Best time to arrive
If you want the best chance of seeing the mill working, arrive early — milling depends on enough wind, and sometimes the mill will use an electric motor instead.
What to look for (even if you only have 20 minutes)
The five sails and their shutter system
The fantail at the back of the cap (it helps the mill face the wind)
Inside: the brakewheel, wallower, and the route down to the stones
A simple checklist for curious visitors
✅ Look up (always look up)
✅ Ask what’s running today
✅ Take a moment to listen to the building
✅ Browse flour/merchandise if available
✅ Check the calendar for special events
